The character grows up in a culture where whatever they are is not just accepted but completely unremarkable, so they never think of being, for example, bisexual, as any more intrinsic to their sense of self than being short or blond. Then they end up living somewhere else, and they have to deal with the fact that in this new culture, bisexuality is a marked identity and it makes a difference in how they interact with the world.
